We are looking for a machinist apprentice to complete a level 3 machining technician apprenticeship. This Position is in conjunction with University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre.  The candidate will be required to operate, competently and safely, a wide range of metalworking production equipment to produce components according to given drawings and to the necessary drawing and quality specifications.

Part of the job role may require you to undertake such other duties and responsibilities of an equivalent nature, as maybe determined by the line manager from time to time.

The role is 38.5 hours per week based primarily at Pryor’s Head Office in central Sheffield and pays £269.50 per week. The closing date is 19th July 2024.

Role & responsibilities

By the end of the apprenticeship the apprentice will be expected to have developed to fulfil the following responsibilities:

  • To comply with company Health & safety procedures and policies surrounding the type of work undertaken and responsibilities as a company employee
  • The ability to read and interpret engineering drawings correctly
  • Operate different metal working machine types safely and in an efficient manner to planned times
  • At times work with designers or service engineers to produce non-standard components with minimum support under the pressure of tight deadlines
  • Understanding of suitable tooling and its limitations
  • Knowledge of materials and factors affecting machining of such materials
  • Ability to use a wide range of inspection and metrology equipment to work to ensure machined components match the required specification
  • Good working knowledge of pre-production planning processes
  • To fill in appropriate documentation to demonstrate conformance to Pryor’s quality standards
  • Responsibility for producing a wide range of components some high value that conform to all standards and requirements
  • Operating various metalworking machines in a safe and efficient manner with respect to themselves and others
  • To work with other team members and departments to review, develop & improve upon existing manufacturing processes and to introduce more efficient, effective practices into the production facility (e.g. Reduce production times, improve designs for manufacture and look at other means to reduce costs)

Please note that this role requires lifting and handling of heavy jigs, fixtures and work pieces, and standing at machines all day (note: chairs are supplied).

Skills required:

  • Ability to problem solve and use some initiative to achieve manufacturing solutions
  • Good levels of numeracy, literacy and computer skills required to carry out the job

Things to consider:

During the first year you will be required to attend the University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre in Sheffield, full time for an initial block of study. You will return to your workplace one Friday per month. After the initial block training you will attend the AMRC Training Centre for one day a week to undertake the knowledge study. The remaining four days will be spent in company learning on the job.

Advanced Apprenticeships entry requirements

You will need both of the following:

  • GCSE English language C or 4 or above
  • GCSE Maths C or 4 or above.

Applicants are also required to successfully complete a series of assessments at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre, as well as an employer recruitment and selection process to secure a place on an apprenticeship programme.
