A Vehicle Identification Number (or VIN) is a unique identifier number that is applied to the chassis of every vehicle in the world, helping protect against theft and fraud. The number serves as a ‘fingerprint’ for the car, as no two vehicles will have the same VIN.
Composed of 17 alphanumeric characters, a VIN identifies the vehicle’s manufacturer, specifications, plant of origin and year of manufacture. A VIN can be used to track recalls, vehicle history, insurance coverage and importantly, current registrant. This means that if a vehicle is recovered after being stolen or lost, authorities can use the VIN to find the registered keeper.
