The new LOCUS can read through paint

Pryor Marking Technology, a leader in the provision of marking, vision and software for traceability, announced today the launch of a new low-cost, ultrasound code reader named LOCUS. This hand-held reader is able to decode Data Matrix and human readable marks concealed by paint or other industrial coatings including oil and grease, to a depth in excess of 1mm. Pryor is confident that there will be an immediate demand for this capability in markets including aerospace, automotive and defence and the harsh and challenging environment of the oil and gas industries.
John Kidder, commercial operations manager at Pryor Marking Technology, explained: “The market for cradle-to-grave traceability is rapidly expanding as more industries recognise the benefits of being able to trace individual components, tools and products throughout their life cycle. In virtually all industrial sectors the ability to track a component, even after it has been coated in paint or other protective coatings, will allow an even higher level of sophistication and security in what is already a highly managed and monitored process.”
LOCUS uses an advanced, patented ultrasound technology to automatically adapt its reading capabilities to compensate for the varying thickness of the covering layer of paint, dirt or other forms of contamination. Unlike conventional ultrasound technology, LOCUS is unique in that it does not require a fluid coupling medium and operates using only dry coupling with the surface containing the hidden code. The reader’s interface also provides options for configurable parameters that can be fine tuned for ensuring image optimisation, including the ability to read codes marked around the circumference of a component. The real time ultrasound images generated by LOCUS are decoded using Medusa™ imaging software developed by Absolute Vision Ltd, a division of Pryor supplying machine vision solutions to industry.
Pryor is able to offer marking solutions using a range of techniques including Dot peen, milling, drilling, mechanical and laser cut engraving, all of which can be read by LOCUS, up to a maximum dimension of 30 x 30mm. The LOCUS hand-held unit is powered by Li-ion batteries which can be charged via USB or external cable. It can operate at temperatures from 0°C - 40°C and meets the requirements for IP 54 Ingress protection against dust and splashing water, making it ideal for some of the harsher manufacturing and field environments.
